Our New Ceylon Green Teas

We are very happy to finally offer a range of green tea grown and produced right in the home of Dilmah, Sri Lanka. Like so many large tea companies we’ve had to source our green tea through China in the past due to the volume required. With the set up of our factory on Park Estate in the high region of Sri Lanka we now have the ability to meet these volumes with an incredibly high quality and pure tea that is packed fresh by ourselves then delivered direct to you. Until now we have sourced high quality organic green tea from China, even though we didn’t label these as organic teas. However the concerns of Dilmah founder Merrill J. Fernando spurred him to make a big change, changes by which he could guarantee the integrity of his tea for Dilmah customers.

In his own words Dilmah founder Merrill J. Fernando he has written the following letter.

If you have any questions or concerns over this new range which replaces our old green teas please read below and check the FAQ’s that follow.

“You may or may not have read news items in the New York Times, Times of India, and Straits Times Singapore, about the high percentage of pesticides, above permitted levels, in some green tea. These reports are on the internet. Although, I am unable to confirm, if those reports are true or not, I have my concerns and I personally stopped drinking green tea. Given this situation and my responsibility to Dilmah customers, I decided to produce our own green tea and guarantee its purity, like that of  Dilmah Single Origin 100% Pure Ceylon Black Tea.

I set up a modern green tea factory on Park Estate, in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka, at an elevation of 6500-7000ft above sea level, at a cost of US$1.2million – a very substantial cost for a small, family business.  Tea from this region is of unique character and flavour, and much sought after by black tea lovers. At Park Estate, I could also ensure the provenance of the tea and ensure stringent quality, testing every step of the way in the tradition of Dilmah. Also, I realized we would be introducing a completely new character, flavour, taste and terroir, very special to Nuwara Eliya region.

In my first sip of  Nuwara Eliya Park Estate green tea, it’s  character, flavour and taste amazed me. So, I sent samples to recognised tea experts in various countries including China, the main producer of green tea.  Endorsements received confirmed my discovery and included one  “surely this is the world’s finest green tea, I have ever tasted. You have a winner”.  I am comfortable that Park Estate Nuwara Eliya Green Tea offers tea lovers the finest quality, pure and safe green tea.

I undertook this investment strictly to safeguard my Dilmah tea customers. We make no additional money in supplying Single Origin 100%  Pure Ceylon Green Tea.  My conscience is now clear, in supplying Pure Ceylon Green Tea to my Dilmah fold. You may savour the difference in the comfort of the finest green tea.

I have been raised in a culture of perfection and the best, in everything I do.  This is very different to today’s business culture.  So, I do battle with it, all the time. Terroir of Nuwara Eliya region tea is acclaimed the world’s finest. Importantly, it is also the most costly therefore,  Dilmah Single Origin Pure Ceylon Green Tea is higher in cost than other green teas.  When you become aware of facts stated above, you may appreciate why Dilmah green tea is 2 or 3 cents per cup more pricey.
